Mountaineer Geno Smith has spent this past season playing for the New York Giants, playing backup to longtime starting quarterback Eli Manning. As of Tuesday afternoon, it looks like the Giants coaching staff wants to see what this Mountaineer is made of. Smith will be starting in the Giants’ game versus the Oakland Raiders Sunday.
The New York Giants have struggled this season with Manning at the helm, with a 2-9 record going into the first week of December. Eli Manning has started every Giants game since November of 2004, with a current record of 210 consecutive starts. Smith starting over Manning breaks that streak, which was only 87 starts behind former Packers great Brett Favre.
Smith is in his fifth season in the NFL, with a carer that many have seen face his fair share of struggles. Smith was drafted by the Jets where he played until signing with the Giants in March of this year. This season, Smith saw the field in early November where he came in for Manning in a 51-17 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
This is yet another chance for one of West Virginia’s loved quarterbacks to prove themselves in the NFL, going up against two familiar faces on the defense Sunday, Bruce Irvin and Karl Joseph.
