The men’s basketball season is getting well under way, and the many Mountaineers fans are noticing a familiar face from the coaches bench is missing. That face? None other than former assistant to the head coach, Billy Hahn. Hahn has been a staple on the men’s basketball team for almost a decade, going from assistant coach to assistant to the head coach in 2011.
After over forty years in coaching, it seems this summer was the time for Hahn to take a step back. Per reports earlier in the summer, Hahn felt that it was time to enjoy life outside of basketball. Hahn has family, including a grandchild, in Florida and it seems he and his wife will split time between Florida and Morgantown.
It goes without saying that Hahn has been missed on the team this season, as he always was in good spirits and seemed to be enjoying his time. This phase of his life, retirement and grandchildren, will be just as enjoyable for Hahn.
Fun tidbit about the retired assistant; Hahn has joked that Maryland won a National Championship the year he left the team. He retired from Huggins and the Mountaineers prior to the start of this season, so maybe Huggins will be sending Hahn a ring next spring as a thank you gift.
