In-State Sophomore Ends Season Leading Nation

HEDGESVILLE, WV, – Standing at 5’10 180 lbs, sophomore Malakai Brown did not necessarily look to be the most imposing athlete when the Hedgesville Eagles took the field on Friday nights this past season.

However, those misconceptions were soon erased as soon as Brown caught the ball. 81 receptions, 1393 yards, and 15 touchdowns later Brown not only became the leading receiver in the state, but in the country according to Maxpreps.

Brown’s 81 receptions is best among underclassmen in the nation and 97th overall. His 1393 receiving yards ranks him 3rd among underclassmen in the nation and 83rd overall.

Brown was also the only underclassman to receive first team honors on the 2017 Class AAA All-State team.

According to MaxPreps, Brown was the only receiver in the state to surpass 1,000 yards receiving. He also led the state in receptions, receiving yards per game, and receiving touchdowns.

While Brown may have come in under the radar this past season there is no doubt that he will be the focal point of opposing defensive coordinators across the state the next two seasons.
