All You Need To Know About Recruiting Star Ratings

I’ve made it known that I am not a fan of star ratings for high school prospects. I believe it gives fans a false sense of what to expect from future collegiate athletes.

Scrolling through Twitter this evening I came across a tweet from WVU freshman All-American Lamonte McDougle that solidified my point.

McDougle was rated a 3 star by both 247 and Rivals. And while most of the ESPN Freshman All-American team is filled with 4 and 5 star athletes McDougle is not the only 3 star name on that list.

Dorian Etheridge, the outside linebacker at Louisville, originally from Charleston, WV, was listed as a 3 star athlete by both Rivals and 247.

WVU has made a living signing 3 star athletes and turning them into All-American’s and NFL draft picks.

So while the Mountaineers are in the midst of the best recruiting class in program history remember, it is not always about the star rating.
