Coastal Carolina fends off WVU

CONWAY, S.C.–The West Virginia baseball team dropped the finale of the Brittain Resorts Invitational to Coastal Carolina by the score of 5-2 on Sunday afternoon.

The Mountaineers (2-5) scored two runs on nine hits. The Chanticleers (6-2) five runs (three earned) on eight hits.

Andrew Zitel went 2-for-4 for WVU. Jimmy Galusky and Kyle Gray both had solo home runs.

Coastal Carolina took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Matt Beaird’s double to right center plated Lee Sponseller.

The Chanticleers added an unearned run in the third on a sacrifice fly.

Keaton Weisz’s sacrifice fly scored Sponseller in the fourth and put Coastal Carolina ahead 3-0.

In the fifth, Seth Lancaster homered to right center, extending the Chanticleers’ advantage to 4-0.

Back-to-back dingers from  Gray and Galusky cut WVU’s deficit to 4-2 in the seventh.

However, a bases loaded hit batter got a run back for Coastal Carolina in the bottom half of the inning.

The Mountaineers loaded the bases in the ninth but Ivan Gonzalez grounded out to end the game.

WVU travels to Bowling Green for a weekend series with Western Kentucky beginning next Friday.
