AUSTIN, Texas–Matt Coleman and Kerwin Roach Jr. both scored 22 points as Texas defeated No. 20 WVU 87-79 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at the Erwin Center.
It was a huge win for the Longhorns (18-13, 8-10 Big 12) who were searching for another quality win to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive.
Jericho Sims had 17 points and eight rebounds. Dylan Osetkowski chipped in 15 points for Texas.
Lamont West led the Mountaineers (22-9, 11-7) with 15 points. Sagaba Konate had 14 points and eight rebounds. Jevon Carter tallied 12 points. Beetle Bolden and Esa Ahmad both added 10.
The Longhorns outrebounded WVU 37-32.
Things were looking bleak for the Mountaineers when Carter’s reverse layup tied the game at 72-72 with 1.6 seconds left.
Texas used an 11-0 run to pull away from WVU in the extra session. Coleman’s 3 from the right corner gave the Longhorns a 76-74 lead. Then Sims’ dunk, a 3-pointer from Young and a layup by Coleman gave Texas 83-74 lead.
And the Mountaineers were unable to recover.
WVU shot 42 percent from the floor, 27 percent from beyond the arc and 91 percent from the charity stripe.
Texas shot 57 percent from the field, 58 percent from 3-point range and 64 percent from the line.
Carter had six assists. In the first half, the senior set the school record for season assists. Carter moved past Fritz Williams, who had 197 in 1967.
The Mountaineers will travel to Kansas City for the Big 12 Tournament next.
