Tyler Doanes had two hits and drove in three runs, including an inside-the-park homer in the fourth inning. It was WVU’s first inside-the-park home run since March 5, 2017.Jimmy Galusky hit his seventh dinger of the season.
Starting pitcher Isaiah Kearns (3-3) suffered the loss for the Mountaineers. The sophomore pitched 3.0 innings, allowing four runs on three hits.
WVU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Ivan Gonzalez’s sacrifice fly plated Marques Inman.
However, the lead didn’t last long. TCU responded in the bottom half to tie the game at 1-1. Michael Landestoy doubled to begin the inning and scored on Connor Wanhanen’s groundout.
In the third Galusky’s homer gave the Mountaineers back the lead but the Horned Frogs took it right back in the bottom of the frame. A walk and a single put runners at the corners for TCU Kearns struck out Josh Watson but the runner scored on Gonzalez’s botched throw to second. Then A.J. Balta homered, giving TCU a 4-2 lead.
WVU pulled within 4-3 in the fourth on Doanes’ inside the park home run.
With right-hander Braden Zarbnisky on the mound after a pair of leadoff walks, the Horned Frogs extended their lead to 6-3 in the fifth, on two bases-loaded walks.
But the Mountaineers refused to go away. Darius Hill led off the sixth with a single and Kyle Gray’s base hit put runners at the corners. Then Doanes doubled to left-center, scoring both Hill and Gray and pulling WVU with 6-5.
The Horned Frogs added runs in the seventh and eighth.
WVU returns home on Tuesday, May 15 to battle Marshall.
