MORGANTOWN, W.Va.–The West Virginia University baseball team fell 4-1 to Baylor on Friday afternoon at Monongalia County Ballpark.
The Mountaineers (27-24, 9-14 Big 12) scored just one run on eight hits while the Bears (31-19, 12-11) plated four runs on eight hits.
Brandon White and Kyle Gray both had two hits for WVU.
Kade Strowd (4-6) suffered the loss for the Mountaineers. He tossed 1.1 innings, surrendering two runs on four hits.
Baylor jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second. Josh Bissonette singled up the middle, scoring Shea Langeliers from third.
However, WVU tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Gray walked. Ivan Gonzalez’s base hit up the middle knocked in Gray.
But the Bears would retake the lead in the fifth. With runners at the corners, Davis Wendzel doubled home both runners, giving Baylor a 3-1 advantage.
In the eighth, the Bears tacked on an unearned run.
The Mountaineers refused to go away quietly. With two outs, Braden Zarbnisky reached on an error. Then White’s infield single brought the tying run to the plate. But Troy Montemayor struck out Darius Hill swinging to end the game.
Senior BJ Myers will try and take the series for WVU on Senior Day on Saturday at 12 p.m.
The Mountaineers can finish no higher than seventh in the Big 12.
