Tony Mathis 3 star RB from Cedartown, Georgia
One of WVU’s top RB targets for the Class of ‘19 made his first official visit of his recrurment on Thursday. That was a visit to Morgantown for a camp being held this weekend. Mathis has yet to make any announcement on a top list of schools. His commitment day is also unknown and there will be a process before he picks where to play college football. He also has interests and offers from Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Georgia, Iowa State, and 18 other schools. While he has gained many offers since this story broke, Rivals.com reported back in late march that Mathis had his eye on WVU and he was interested to say the least.
MY GUESS: It’s really too early to have a idea of where Mathis will commit too, with that said, all signs so far have pointed towards him landing with the Mountaineers, and until he shows other interests, WVU seems like the lead dog as of now.
D’von Ellies 3 star DT from Owings Mills, Maryland
Plain and simple, this would be a huge steal for the Mountaineers. Ellies recently released his top 5 and WVU made the cut along with Rutgers, Virginia Tech, Maryland, and Ohio State. Schools want this kids athleticism, he can dunk a basketball and he plays Defensive Tackle, those things don’t usually mix. He does not have a commitment date yet but I would expect him to choose a school soon, and I don’t expect him to choose WVU. Ellies has just been too strong on Ohio State through this whole situation and I would be very surprised if that’s not where he ends up going.
MY GUESS: Ellies ends up in Columbus, Ohio. A offer from Urban Meyer and the Ohio State is just too enticing to pass up.
Yusuf Terry 3 star WR from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
When Terry announced his top 3, WVU stayed in the running. That top three (Baylor, Rutgers and WVU) originated as a wide open race back in June. Today though, Terry is seen as a big time Baylor lean. We are now a few days away from his August 4th commitment, and WVU has creeped back into the mix. It really is a two way race as Rutgers has seemed to fall behind. I think WVU has done a nice job of making up ground recently but Terry’s tie towards Baylor seems just too strong.
MY GUESS: They’ve been the front runners for a while now and that ends up with getting the commitment. Terry will probably commit to Baylor.
Amir Richardson 3 star ATH from Morgantown, West Virginia
One of the bigger in state recruits WVU has been focusing on is Amir Richardson. He recently announced he will commit on July 30th. Richardson released his final 7 which included WVU, Marshall, Pitt, Army, Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, and Temple. All of those offers have him playing different positions as well. WVU wants him to play a Safety/Spur role. He seems to like that and is a heavy WVU lean. The number 4 ranked player from the state of West Virginia looks like he wants to stay home.
MY GUESS: In a couple of days, I expect Dana to get some good news from Richardson. He is viewed as a heavy WVU lean and I don’t think there’s enough time for any of these schools to steer him away. I expect him to commit to WVU.
Tykee Smith 3 star S from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Smith has some time to make a decision, his commitment is on August 23rd. He hasn’t announced a final 6, but it seems to be Maryland, Michigan State, North Carolina, Syracuse, Baylor, and WVU. This honestly seems like a 4 star basketball recruits final 5. Smith isn’t a basketball player though, he’s a legit Safety that WVU has had their eye on for a long time. He looks to be a strong WVU lean and reports recently make it seem that it’s only between Baylor, Maryland, and WVU. His tape reminds me a lot of a Karl Joseph when it comes to his physicality.
MY GUESS: WVU has been in the lead for a long time, I don’t think Smith would change his mind, I bet he ends up in Morgantown.
Isaiah Hazel 3 star WR from Upper Marlboro, Maryland
This is a big decision for WVU. Hazel has been on their radar for a long time and he will be committing on July 28th. The big play threat receiver struggles to get separation but is explosive with the ball in his hands. It wasn’t until recently that WVU emerged as heavy favorites to land Hazel. The WR has a final 3 of WVU, Maryland, and Virginia Tech and many believe he will commit to Morgantown. He is the 4th best player in the state of Maryland and stealing him from the Terps would be huge.
MY GUESS: He loves the Mountaineers, I don’t think he changes his mind in a span of hours, I think he commits to WVU.
