MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (September 20, 2018) – The West Virginia University baseball team will return to PNC Park in 2019, and will face Pitt in the Backyard Brawl on Tuesday, May 14, at the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Mountaineers will play at PNC Park for the third consecutive year, after wins in 2017 and 2018.
A game time and ticket information for the contest will be announced at a later date.
“We are really excited for the opportunity to play at PNC Park again in 2019, and looking forward to bringing the Backyard Brawl to one of the finest ballparks in all of Major League Baseball,” WVU coach Randy Mazey said. “Thank you once again to the entire Pittsburgh Pirates organization, especially Bob Nutting and Frank Coonelly, for making this opportunity possible for our team and WVU, and for their continued support of college baseball. We are looking forward to another memorable experience this coming spring at PNC Park.”
West Virginia is 2-0 at PNC Park, with a 4-2 win over Penn State in 2017, and a 3-2, walk-off win in 10 innings against the Nittany Lions last season.
The 2019 game in Pittsburgh will mark the fourth consecutive year the Mountaineers will play at a Major League facility. In 2016, they faced the Arizona Diamondbacks in an exhibition contest at Salt River Fields, Arizona’s Spring Training ballpark.
In WVU’s oldest and most-played rivalry, West Virginia is 107-88 all-time against Pitt. The Mountaineers have won four in a row in the series and nine of the last 12, after a 12-1 win in Morgantown last season. The two teams first met in 1895, and have played at least once every season since 2008.
West Virginia’s complete 2019 schedule will be unveiled later this fall.
