After two non-conference games, a hurricane, and a cancelled game; Big 12 football is back. The Mountaineers play host to the Kansas State Wildcats this coming Saturday, with a 3:30 kickoff. The Mountaineers are coming off of their not-planned week off, coming off of the heels of Hurricane Florence’s presence in North Carolina.
The matchup between the two teams is typically one of West Virginia’s more highly contested games during Big 12 play. This season’s game may be a slightly more skewed in the favor of the Old Gold and Blue. The Wildcats are making their trip to Morgantown with several younger faces lining up on defense, coming off of the heels of their game versus Texas-San Antonio.As of early this week, the Wildcats could be down up to four starters on defense, putting a lot pressure on the young players to mature and mature quickly.
The Wildcats have won three out of the last five meetings between the two teams, with the Mountaineers winning in Manhattan 28-23 last season.
Since the Mountaineers did not have to play their last non-conference game, the Mountaineers were able to get an extra week of preparation and rest before taking on the Wildcats. The Wildcats are making the trip east on the heels of a victory, bringing with them the hopes that their budding defense can stop Will Grier and the Mountaineers.
There has been talk about the Wildcats defense potentially shaking up the star quarterback and explosive offense, but the Mountaineers are coming off of a bonus bye week, meaning the team should be healthy and more than ready to play.
