MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Nov. 1, 2018) –  The West Virginia University women’s basketball team comes at No. 25 in the USA Today Sports Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll, released Thursday.

The Mountaineers received 73 votes in the preseason poll, which is voted upon by 32 head coaches at Division I institutions. Baylor led the way for the Big 12, ranking at No. 5 with 656 votes, followed by Texas at No. 8 with 535 votes. Additionally, Kansas received 14 votes.

Additionally, Missouri comes in at No. 14 with 318 votes in the poll, while Iowa is at No. 17 with 262. West Virginia will face both the Tigers (Dec. 2) and the Hawkeyes (Nov. 23) this season.

West Virginia also received 35 votes in the Associated Press Preseason Poll, released Wednesday.

The Mountaineers battled through adversity to put together a 25-12 mark last season. They return four letterwinners from last season’s team, including starters Naomi Davenport and Katrina Pardee and reserves Theresa Ekhelar and Nia Staples. In addition, guard Tynice Martin returns after sitting out in 2017-18 due to injury.

Redshirt sophomore transfer Kysre Gondrezick made her debut in Gold and Blue in the team’s 88-53 exhibition win over West Liberty on Tuesday. Freshmen Kari Niblack, Madisen Smith and Jala Jordan saw their first collegiate action in the win as well. Junior transfer Lucky Rudd is expected to join the lineup in December after transferring to WVU from NC State last winter.
