Why West Virginia Will Win

The Mountaineers come to New York City riding a four-game winning streak. After a rocky start to the season with losses to Buffalo and Western Kentucky, WVU is slowly improving. The Mountaineers are turning the ball over less and making shots. On Saturday, WVU shot a season-best 56.1 percent from the floor in a win over Youngstown State. Esa Ahmad (16.6 points, 5.4 rebounds) is the lone senior on this young Mountaineers team. Junior Sagaba Konate (14.8 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.3 blocks) returned to the lineup last game after missing a game with a knee injury. Konate was third in the nation in blocks last season and is a presence in the paint. Beetle Bolden (13.4 points) was red-hot from beyond the arc against Youngstown State. WVU’s bench has had a little pop of late from Emmitt Matthews Jr., Brandon Knapper, Jordan McCabe and Lamont West, who is averaging 14.5 points and 5.3 rebounds off the bench. The 6-foot-8 junior is shooting 45 percent from 3-point range.  Florida has three losses on the season. Florida State pounded the Gators and then lost close matchups with Oklahoma and Butler. The Gators are allowing just 62.7 points, 36.2 percent from the floor and 32.2 from the 3-point line. ) Deaundrae Ballard is averaging 10.9 points per contest. KeVaughn Allen (8.7 points is coming off a 13 point, five rebound and a career-high seven assist game. Last time he played at the Garden, Allen poured in a career-high 35 points last season. Noah Locke (8.3 points) has been one of Florida’s best defenders. Despite struggling offensively, the Gators have turned it up on the defensive side.
