MORGANTOWN, W.Va.–James “Beetle” Bolden scored 22 points as West Virginia defeated Lehigh 78-68 on Sunday afternoon at the Coliseum.
Esa Ahmad had 21 points. Derek Culver picked up his first career double-double with 11 points and 11 boards. Wesley Harris chipped in 10 points.
Pat Andree led the Mountain Hawks (7-4) with 18 points. Jordan Cohen tallied 14 points. Kyle Leufroy had 12 and Lance Tejada 10.
The Mountaineers (8-4) dominated Lehigh on the glass, outrebounding the Mountain Hawks 52-25. Culver was a big part of WVU’s success on the boards.
“He could be an elite rebounder, I don’t think there’s any doubt about that,” head coach Bob Huggins said. “His strength and athleticism, he’s got good hands.”
There were 11 lead changes in the game and seven ties before the Mountaineers took control midway through the second half.
Freshman Jordan McCabe earned his first start and finished with five points.
“Jordan had two really good practices so we started him and he struggled a little bit, “Huggins said. “Brandon Knapper came in and struggled a little bit so we put Beetle back at the point.”
WVU shot 42 percent from the floor, 35 percent from beyond the arc and 61 percent from the free throw line.
Lehigh shot 44 percent from the field, 43 percent from 3-point range and made 11-of-15 from the line.
The Mountaineers begin conference play on Wednesday at 7 p.m. (ET) against No. 11 Texas Tech.
