AUSTIN, Texas–Matt Coleman III tallied 17 points as Texas defeated West Virginia 61-54 on Saturday night.
Derek Culver scored 17 points for the Mountaineers (8-6, 0-2 Big 12). Beetle Bolden chipped in 13 points and Esa Ahmad added 10.
Dylan Osetkowski had 14 points. Elijah Mitrou-Long added 10 points for the Longhorns (10-4, 2-0).
Both Coleman and Osetkowski made several clutch plays down the stretch to hold off WVU.
With 8:49 remaining Osetkowski sank a 3 to give Texas a 49-41 lead. However, the Mountaineers refused to back down.
Bolden’s layup and 3-pointer cut the deficit to 49-46.
Bolden made two free throws to pull WVU within one, 51-50, with 4:44 remaining but the Mountaineers could never get any closer.
With the shot clock winding down, Coleman hit a step-back 3-pointer the Longhorns a 59-54 lead with 1:03 left.
Jordan McCabe missed a 3-pointer and Wesley Harris’ shot was blocked by Osetkowski to put the final nail in WVU’s coffin.
The Mountaineers had 12 turnovers while forcing 11 Texas miscues.
WVU shot 40 percent from the field, 25 percent from beyond the arc and made 9-of-14 from the free throw line.
The Longhorns shot 50 percent from the floor, 38 percent from 3-point range and 68 percent from the line.
The Mountaineers travel to Fort Worth to take on TCU on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. (ET).
